News from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carer/s,
I am hoping all families had a restful Easter break and are well into the swing of things at the end of the second week back. I welcome back all families and students to the school and am looking forward to the many activities and events our school has planned this term.
To start, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our students. For this fortnight in sport we congratulate Nash, April, Elodie, Paityn, Summer, Holly, Jacinta, Shiloh, Khy, Elijah, Taylor, and Danii for representing the school as part of the recent Tablelands Touch Football team. I would also like to thank and acknowledge Jacinta on being a student official at the rugby league competition also.
On Friday, we had approximately 70 runners participating in the district cross country competition at Yungaburra. I had the privilege of being the convenor for this event and was excited to welcome schools and competitors from across the district to see who made the district team and representing us at the peninsula trial. I thank Ms Shana Backshall, Ms Tiarni McCarthy, Mr Darren Grose and Ms Stacey Stremouchiw for their work as part of the convening team and also Mr Keenan Wockner, Mr John Croft and our administration ladies for the support they have provided in getting our students to this carnival and the track set up.

I would also like to thank the community for their patience regarding some staffing and class changes which occurred at the start of the term. Mr Glenn Dumbrell resigned from Education Queensland over the break, and we thank him for his time at Malanda. This departure was unfortunately coupled with statewide upgrades to the school’s technology systems meaning that timetable changes were only able to be completed immediately before school recommenced for the term. I thank my Deputy Principals for working hard in the last part of the holidays to have a smooth transition on day one of the term.
With events to start term two we are looking forward to welcoming our parents to parent teacher interviews on Tuesday 6th May. Information about booking meetings with teachers has been sent to parent emails, however please contact us if you are having trouble using the system. On this day we will also host our first round of immunisations for the year with the year 7s, please ensure you have completed the paperwork and this is returned to the office as soon as possible.
In terms of facilities at the school, Ms Sharon Brown, our Business Manager, and I met with the regional infrastructure team this week to finalise the plans and dates for our tuckshop upgrade to commence. We are set to close the tuckshop at the end of the term, with works continuing into early next term. More information about exact dates for the closures and plans for students to access food at school will be forthcoming once the materials have been ordered by the contractors.
Wishing everyone a wonderful fortnight ahead.
Yours in learning,
Natasha Lyndon
Principal

News from the Science Department
Big congratulations to Amelie and Ms Lebner!
We’re so excited to share that they’ve been selected to attend the STEM Girl Power Camp this May!
This incredible opportunity will see them connect with inspiring female leaders in science, technology, engineering and maths, and we couldn’t be prouder to have them representing Malanda SHS.

🚗💥 In SIP this week, our students dove into the hard facts around car accidents and the major causes impacting young drivers. After unpacking the statistics, students took it one step further — acting out risky driving behaviours and identifying potential hazards on the road.
Our audience wasn't off the hook either! They worked together to brainstorm real strategies to eliminate risky behaviours and make our roads safer for everyone. 🚦👏
Such important lessons for our future drivers!

Sports News:
This term is another busy time for our sporting kids, parents and staff. We kicked off our interschool carnivals last week with District Cross Country on Friday at Tinaburra, overall we placed 2nd (by only 5 points). We had many students achieve great results across the day in particular, the following students placed in the top 3 of their age group:
Loretta Shaw 3rd , Shin Mu 3rd , Miles Pearce 2nd , Abbie Millar 3rd, Khy Allen 2nd, Caden Allen 2nd, Danii Stremouchiw 3rd, Rachel Kidcaff 1st, Olivia Koelman 3rd, Erika Koelman 1st,, Indi Palmer 2nd and Nash Coghlan 3rd. A special shout out to Erika Koelman who set a new district course record for the open girls!
We have a number of trials coming up ranging from individual sports such as golf to team sports with rugby union, girls rugby league and junior touch football in the mix. Make sure your student is listening to notices or check the calendar that was sent at the start of the school year to ensure they don’t miss any trials.
In school sport, students have a number of opportunities to participate in afterschool programs this term. Volleyball will continue on Mondays and Wednesday, as well as running club Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. This term we are offering athletics training on Thursday afternoons (3:15 – 4:30pm) – these forms can be collected from outside T block staff room.
We will begin training sessions for our touch football academy this week, Wednesday afternoons 3:15-4:30pm. This year we are hoping to send teams to NQ All schools which is set to be mid term 3, students who are wanting this opportunity are expected to be attending these training sessions. Permission forms are outside T block staffroom.
T20 streetsmart cricket competition will kick off in a few weeks, we wish our teams the best of luck.
Athletics carnival – Wednesday and Thursday of week 10 and the theme is 80’s!
Yours in sport
Ms Backshall

Year 8 skipping into Term 2
The Year 8s are jumping into Term 2 like pros!
Our HPE students have hit the ground skipping — literally — showing off their skills, teamwork, and a whole lot of energy. From criss-crosses to double-unders, there’s no skipping this level of enthusiasm!
Let’s hear it for the smooth moves, sweaty brows, and those moments where the rope had a mind of its own. Bring on a term full of fun, fitness, and learning!

Last fortnight year 8 had a focus on synchronised line dancing, primarily Nutbush, Cotton Eye Joe and Macarena

Tickets are $10 each and will go on sale from Monday of week 3 to Tuesday week 5. They can be purchased at the payments window at the office with either cash or card (be kind to our amazing office staff). Tickets must be pre-purchased; no tickets will be for sale on the night.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the night, catering provided by the Greek Food Van.
Email Macey or come find your school captains around the school to get your favourite songs added to the playlist before the night.

School Drama Club
Introducing our new School Drama Club!
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new Drama Club, held every Friday during first lunch in the Drama Room. And yes… you can bring your lunch along!
Open to all students, the Drama Club is a space to explore creativity, build confidence, meet new people and have fun! Whether you're passionate about acting, singing, choreography, directing, set design, lighting or music, there’s a role for everyone. This student-led initiative is designed to nurture talents across all areas of theatre and production, and I will be there to help guide and support the students.
We’ll begin with interactive drama games to build skills and teamwork, eventually working towards short one-act play. Our ultimate goal? A whole-school musical production in 2026! Students will also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and help drive the club forward, including organising fundraising efforts to support performances and licensing fees.
No experience is necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and imagination. Come along, get involved and discover the magic of theatre!
Mrs Day 😊
