News from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carer/s,
Week eight already and we have to question where the term has gone? As usual we have had a busy fortnight at Malanda with students well and truly undertaking assessments to demonstrate their learning for the term. This week also saw the conclusion of the NAPLAN testing window and I thank all students, staff and families for their work and support to undertake these tests. Again, I want to reiterate that whilst these tests supply the school information about what students are capable of compared with students from across the nation, we know our students and the abilities they have outside of a test and we embrace the many talents and skills our students possess.
In particular for this this fortnight, we congratulate Elektra, Katie, Emma, Gisella, Jessica, Rhynarla, Zali, Taylor, Riley (shadow) and Maddison (shadow) for representing Tablelands at the district girls volleyball. Congratulations is also extended to Rhys for his selection in the Queensland under 19s cricket team and Abbie and Kinsley for making the Peninsula swimming team, well done! I also want to acknowledge and extend a thank you to all staff who so far have assisted in tablelands sporting teams and selections – our students do not progress to the next level without the support and dedication shown from our own team.
Within the next fortnight in particular, we will be hosting our annual cross country. Information has come to parents in relation to this and I look forward to seeing all students participate and gain points for their sporting houses.
Aside from sport, over the weekend, Amelie won ‘Best Speaker’ at the district finals for Lions Youth of the Year, an amazing achievement. A sincere thanks to Peter Axford for supporting all students in this competition.
As we start heading into the cooler weather, another reminder to families to check student’s uniform stocks at home so students are warm and complying with the school’s uniform standards. Due to the wet weather we have also seen students coming to school in various shoes, and a reminder to parents that footwear needs to cover the entire foot and meet workplace health and safety requirements.
Wishing everyone a wonderful fortnight ahead.
Yours in learning,
Natasha Lyndon

7 HPE students practice their obstacle courses last week. This week they are presenting. They may have to make some modifications to suit the weather....

Year 7 HPE students completing their assessment task. Students had to work collaboratively in groups to create an inclusive obstacle course for their peers to complete. A little bit of improvisation in this wet weather! Our students were very creative and came up with some fun and interesting obstacles!

ITM students are working hard this term, creating some amazing pieces of work

10 Science Extension
This term in Year 10 Science Extension, the 10B class have been studying the validity of several popular Scientific Conspiracy Theories and forming personal opinions around whether they believe each theory is probable and/or possible. It’s one thing for people to think that a theory is improbable, but if one can argue that a Scientific Theory is “possible”, then that can lead to a lot of interesting Scientific discussion and possibilities. This unit has also helped students think objectively about whether they should believe what they see on social media or not, particularly in the current age of AI generated images and information.

News from the Sports Captains

Hi everybody,
Welcome back to another amazing week of sport. Here is a quick update of what’s been happening in an around school. Lately we have had a number of students go away for trials to join the peninsula team. Last Monday, a number of Malanda girls went down to Smithfield State High School to compete for a spot in the volleyball team. It was an amazing day full of encouragement and competition, congratulations to all the girls. A huge shout out to Pippa D, Rustin C and Myles G for making the districts basketball team. We are all wishing you the best in the upcoming basketball peninsula trials. Good luck!
Our junior and senior wheelchair basketball competition has been a hit across all grades. It’s amazing to see a range of age groups coming down and trying out a new sport. We love to see the friendly competition and sportsmanship all students have displayed. I would also like to thank all the senior students coming down and helping with refereeing or just supporting the younger grades.
On the 28th of March, we will be holding our interhouse cross country. We just wanted to share some notes and expectations for the day.
- Anyone who shows up on the day must join in whether that is running the competitive track or the participation track.
- Please bring your hat, running shoes and a water bottle as this is an all-day event
- The theme this year is ‘ON THE JOB.’ Whether that is coming dressed as an occupation, as your parent or as a teacher, please join into to this theme.
Most of all please remember to have fun and cheer alongside your house team. We are so excited to see you there!
Love from,
The Sports Captains.

2025 Next Step Year 12 Completers Survey
All Year 12 completers from last year will soon receive an invitation to participate in the Next Step survey. This is their chance to help our school to understand the different pathways of the 2024 Year 12 students and to improve our senior programs and supports for future students. The survey only takes five minutes and asks graduates about their study and work activities since finishing school.
As a thank you for participating, Year 12 completers who complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win a MacBook Air.
We ask parents, siblings and friends to encourage our graduates to complete the survey. If their contact details have changed, please assist survey interviewers by providing their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Graduates may receive an invitation by mail, email or phone. The survey can be completed online or by phone.
