News from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the final edition of the newsletter for the term, and semester – hasn’t time flown by!
As this newsletter goes to print, the Malanda Show gates open for 2025. I wish our ‘Chookies’ and ‘Beefies’ well as they undertake their show handling and judging over the next week and once more thank Mr Dave Kilpatrick, Mr Bruce Dane, Mr Kev Mallyon and all the staff involved in supervising the students during the winter break. These staff go above and beyond during their own time and I, and the student, truly appreciate their efforts.
In the sporting arena we shout out to Myles, Cruz and Patrick on participating in the district Baseball trials, as well as Dani, Nash and Summer at Touch Football. Joel also represented the school at Peninsula golf this week and had the best score he’s ever had at this level of competition. Congratulations to all! I also want to acknowledge Ms Shana Backshall and all the staff at the school who organised and assisted in our recent Athletics carnival. Once again Barrine reign supreme, well done to all students who participated and got into the 80s spirit over the two days. We also thank our wonderful P&C and volunteers for delivering and manning the canteen that was in operation over the two days, it is always great to have your support.
As we draw to the close of the term, there are some staff movements from the commencement of term three. We wish Mrs Michaela Cruikshank all the best as she takes leave to care for her family, as well as Mrs Judy McDowell who is on leave for the remainder of the year. Ms Zoe Reitsma-McKenna is also leaving as she has secured an instrumental music position with the region, and again we wish her well in pursuing her passion area of teaching.
Today families should receive their children’s report cards. We have been advised from central office in Brisbane that there are some issues with the reporting system, and if you have a Gmail email account please be aware that reports may not be sending through properly. Central office have advised that they are working to rectify this as soon as possible. Please know that if you QParents you will still be able to access your child’s report card via this platform from this afternoon, however if you wish for a printed copy, please contact the school and we will arrange this for you in week one of next term.
In terms of facilities, over the holidays we will have our pine tree work finalised, and the tuckshop upgrade commence, so I thank the community for refraining from using the grounds whilst this work commences. If you see anything suspicious, please contact school watch to report this. As we have progress on both improvement works projects, we will advise the community via Facebook as well as the firs edition of the newsletter next term. We have now advertised for a school Tuckshop Manager to commence early next term so once our upgrade is complete we can open again as soon as possible, so if you know anyone who is interested please encourage them to apply: https://smartjobs.qld.gov.au/jobs/QLD-FNR644447-25T
I wish all families well for the mid-year break; stay safe and I look forward to welcoming all students back for day one of term three on Monday 14th July.
Yours in learning,
Natasha Lyndon
Principal

Science News!
In the second half of Term 2, the Year 8’s have been learning about Volcano’s in Geography – more specifically the Hotspot Volcanism that has been creating the Hawaiian Island Chain in the middle of the Pacific Oceanic Tectonic Plate. In order to engage students with this content, they were challenged to work in teams and create their own volcanos out of a limited number of supplies. They had a lot of fun and created some magnificent volcanos.
